The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) provides training to school bus drivers on how to drive safely in severe weather, how to respond to fights and gang activity, and how to spot a person who is carrying a weapon. In addition, schools are required to include bus drivers in their emergency planning. Each bus is equipped with an "emergency kit" that includes a first aid kit, local school safety plan, list of all students riding, current yearbook (for photos), student emergency contact and medical information, and other important items. For more information about this and other school safety efforts, call the GEMA School Safety Project at (404) 635-7000 or visit

(Delaware) Volunteers from the Newcastle County, Delaware, Retired Senior Volunteers Program (RSVP) helped the Christina School District produce ID badges for 15,000 students at twelve of the district's schools to improve school security. The seniors, some of whom had never used a mouse before, learned to use a digital camera, special software, laptop computer, and printer to create the badges. This not only helped the school district track its students but got the seniors involved in creating a safer environment for the young people of their community.
