The 2003 Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools National Conference,
Meeting the Challenge: The Science and Practice of Safe and
Drug-Free Schools, was held in Washington, DC from October
27-29, 2003.
The conference was a significant national event
that brought together leaders at the national, regional, and local
levels, including experts from the various fields of health, education,
mental health, substance abuse prevention, and violence prevention.
The goal of the conference was to deepen knowledge
and share best practices in the field of safe and drug-free schools,
focusing on evidence-based programs that promote the healthy development
of all children. It explored key issues that schools currently face,
including crisis response planning, evidence-based decision making,
science-based programming, health maintenance, and other topics
that affect safer schools.
To assist educators across the country in applying
knowledge gained from the conference, OSDFS has posted speaker presentation
slides and handouts on its conference Web site at www.osdfsnationalconference.org. These resources are free and available
for downloading.
Highlights from the conference will be featured
in the next issue of The Challenge.
